This is a new bit I guess. It basically consists of reviews that get down to the nitty-gritty without pussy footing around or subjecting you to paragraphs full of descriptions you don’t want to read. My philosophy is music should speak for itself but the purpose of this new bit is to maybe give you a faint idea of my personal opinion and what you’re getting yourself into with certain new (or maybe old, haven’t decided yet) releases.
First order of business:
Death Cab For Cutie - “Narrow Stairs (2008)”
Far from their worst but also not their best, extremely solid though. “I Will Possess Your Heart” has NO business being 8 minutes long though. I want good Ben Gibbard lyricism that I can later sift for mixtapes for girls I like, not attempted post-rock 4 minute intros. But, like I said, my verdict is that it’s a very very good album.
Check out this blogger’s breakdown of Vampire Weekend’s debut LP which I just begrudgingly downloaded after hearing their cover of “Exit Music (For a Film)”:
“This is a very obscure band.
It’s literally indie & Afrorock
They play fresh sounds with flutes, very original.
It reminds me a bit of Streetlight Manifesto but that’s just because it’s the only afromusic I know =P
I was shocked to notice there is no black guy in the band”
Brilliant.
I’m no expert but isn’t this just catchy-ish and admittedly-better-than-I-originally-assumed after the disgusting amount of insta-hype indie rock? I’ve heard the Afrobeat influence/sound/whatever discussion here and there, and call me old fashioned but when I think of Afrobeat I think of this. Not some island-y drums and strums here and there atop music that couldn’t be less “African”.
Maybe I’m not listening right. Thanks for the link though dude.
Some lady on at least crack at the electronics store I work at bought this movie on DVD and went off for about 5 minutes about how she had it on betamax but it’s been banned in the US for years and she was so excited to find it on DVD.
Not even as like a conscious decision I’ve gone from watching nearly all of Adult Swim’s content on a Sunday-ly basis to strictly watching “Tim and Eric”. I guess the LOLZ RANDOMMM cartoons from Superdeluxe (i.e. the shit I never watched) are getting picked up and all of the good, original content is getting dropped (Bob Odenkirk, Derek and Simon, Eugene Mirman, “I Love Movies!”, “Nite Live”).
Prediction: this is going to continue to happen. Enjoy creativity on the internet while it’s here.
His tinge of fratty dick-joke-ness kind of keeps him from being inducted into the indie-tastic world of comedians putting out albums on Sub Pop but I really think Kyle Cease is about to do big things. His stand up is already established (to me at least) as a force to be reckoned with, and seeing him in this sketch confirms that he’s good at that too. I think it’s only a matter of time before he gets inducted into the pantheon of creative alternative comedians that collaborate in State/Mr. Show/Tim and Eric alum circles a la A.D. Miles.
